Azure + Willy Wedding Film

Somewhere in the middle of the ceremony, their officiant said something that's stuck with me since:

“that most things in life aren't either/or, they're both/and.

You can be excited and nervous.

You can want the day to last forever

and be relieved the planning is finally over.”

And Azure and Willy's whole relationship, it turns out, is built on exactly that kind of both/and. It's fate, and it's effort. It's an instant connection, and it's a conscious choice they keep making, over and over, on purpose.

Every love story has a version that sounds too cute to be true, and Azure and Willy's is one of them. They matched on a dating app, exchanged a few messages, and then the conversation fizzled out, the way most dating app conversations do. It should have ended there. But Azure posted a photo from a lake trip in Wisconsin, and Willy saw it and had to know what she was doing in his stomping grounds.

Turns out Azure's family has history at that same lake. Along with that coincidence, Azure had also already applied to transfer from St. Thomas to the University of Minnesota Duluth, where Willy was going to school, before the two of them had even properly met.

You can call that fate if you want. Their officiant did, but what struck me more, was everything that came after the “fate” part.

Small choices, made again and again. That's the effort half of the equation, and it's the half that actually built the life these two have now.

A Ceremony Rooted in Where They Came From

The centerpiece of the ceremony was a tree-planting unity ceremony, and it might be one of the most thought out and meaningful versions of this tradition I've filmed.

Azure and Willy each brought soil from the places that raised them, the towns and homes that shaped who they are separately, long before they became a couple.

Their vows followed that same thread. Willy promised to keep working every day to be someone Azure could rely on and be proud to stand by. Azure's vow reached even further back, addressing not just the Willy in front of her but the nineteen-year-old version of him, and every version still to come, promising to keep choosing him and choosing them, in whatever life brings. She called him her once-in-a-lifetime love, her safest place, and her greatest adventure.

The Speeches Told You Everything You Needed to Know

Brody, Willy's childhood best man, kept coming back to one word: loyal. The friend who shows up, who celebrates your wins like they're his own, who never lets you carry hard things alone. He told Azure, through some understandable tears, that Willy has become a better version of himself since she came into the picture, and thanked her for it.

Then Shannon, Azure's best friend of twelve years, opened with a warning that she'd cried every single time she practiced the speech, and asked for no flash photography if it happened again on stage.

It happened.

She talked about meeting Azure in high school through boyfriends who didn't last, a friendship that outlived the relationships that started it, and how Azure has always been the person she looks for first in a crowded room. She also confessed, more than once, to calling Willy "Woody" by mistake the first time they met, a nickname that apparently stuck around as a running joke for years.

Her read on Willy was simple: he's the guy who somehow becomes your personal mechanic, your go-to for hockey and home ownership advice, and the reason their house has been lovingly nicknamed the all-inclusive resort by everyone who's ever crashed there.

Willy and Azure closed the speeches themselves, thanking their families and pointing out something pretty special: both sets of parents were in the room celebrating well over three decades of marriage each.

Not a bad set of examples to be starting a marriage under.

Weddings are full of language about fate, about meant-to-be, about the universe lining things up. And Azure and Willy's day had plenty of that. But what I kept coming back to behind the camera was how much of what made this wedding feel real wasn't fate at all. It was a couple who kept choosing each other, in small ways, long before anyone put rings on it. Forestville Vines gave them a beautiful backdrop for the day, but the story was always going to be about the two of them, and everyone who showed up to prove they'd choose Azure and Willy right back.

Congratulations, Azure and Willy Basil. Here's to the both/and.
